Four ways to boost your happiness at work
We may not usually have the luxury of choosing whether to get up and go to work or not, but to a certain extent, we can choose the attitude with which we do so. Making an effort to keep your working week as positive as possible will not only reduce your stress levels but help you get more done as well.
Look on the bright side of life
Make an effort at least once each day to stop and appreciate the little positives around you. These could be anything from tasks you’ve achieved or help you’ve received from others to getting something extra nice for lunch or catching up with friends after work. Deliberately remembering the good things in life, no matter how small they are, will make you feel more optimistic and able to tackle difficult or stressful tasks.
Do one thing at a time
The more you try and do at once, the more likely you are to feel overwhelmed or make mistakes, so try prioritising and working through your tasks one by one rather than rushing around trying to do everything at the same time. You’ll end up getting more done with less stress, and feel much better in the process.
Take a break
While it’s great to be able to sit down and work on one specific project, it’s important to allow yourself a break from concentration as well. It doesn’t have to be long – just a few minutes each hour, or a more extended break after a few hours – but taking a little bit of time to recharge will make a big difference to how good you feel and therefore how much you’ll be able to get done.
Get comfortable
We’re not suggesting you bring your cosiest armchair to the office or head off to work in your pyjamas, but do take the time to make sure that the equipment you’re using is adjusted to your needs. This could mean changing the height of your desk chair and monitors in the office, or ensuring any safety equipment or PPE (personal protective equipment) fits properly out on the worksite…wherever you are, if you’re spending hours each day working, you might as well do what you can to make it comfortable!
